Reading competition for inspiring young generation

The Rwanda Editing and Literature Organization (RELO) prepared a reading competition on 22, 23, and 30 December 2025, specifically for children between the ages of 9 and 14. 1893 children participated on national reading competition. And 22 children were hosted by RELO in Kigali for the final competition. The initiative aims to foster a strong reading culture among the young generation and empower them to think critically, communicate confidently, and become agents of positive change in their families and communities. The reading competition was organized in three levels: from sectors, Districts and nationally.  The day began with a mix of excitement and nervous energy. Young participants gathered patiently, waiting for their turn to face the panel. Some sat quietly reviewing their thoughts, while others shared encouraging conversations with friends.

At the heart of the competition were RELO’s committed facilitators and mentors who dedicate their time to training children not only to read, but also to understand.

Through structured guidance, the facilitators help learners:

  • Develop strong reading comprehension skills
  • Analyze and interpret literature
  • Connect lessons from books to real-life situations
  • Initiate meaningful conversations and actions within their families and communities

This competition was not about memorization. It was about understanding. It was about transformation.

Preparation Meets Performance

As participants entered the evaluation room, the atmosphere shifted into focused intensity. Seated before a panel, each child confidently answered questions based on the books they had read. Panel members carefully examined responses, challenged ideas, and encouraged deeper reflection. The children responded with remarkable confidence, clarity, and maturity.
It was a powerful demonstration of what happens when young minds are given the right tools and mentorship.

Celebrating Excellence

After a rigorous and inspiring evaluation process, the top five participants emerged. Standing proudly with certificates in hand, they were joined by RELO’s leadership.
The recognition was more than a reward. It was a celebration of discipline, critical thinking, and a growing love for reading.
